So not happy right now. After being on hold for almost 25min, I finally got through to customer support at Telus Mobility. He confirmed all my suspicions. The phone essentially won't work outside of this city and is only good in other major cities since it's an older phone. The people who sold me the activation kit outright lied to me about the service. They knew exactly what I wanted the phone for and where I was going to go with it. They still sold me the activation kit knowing it was worthless to me. In other words, I'm out a bit over $130 in this fiasco and there's nothing I can do about it. Instead, I have to go see about buying a new phone and start over. But I will not deal with Telus ever again. I should have gone with my first choice, should have gone with Bell Mobility instead. Now I have to go buy a new phone (not a used one this time) and a new activation kit from them. It'll probably cost me upwards of $250, but at least I can be guaranteed that the service will work in a large area. Blah. So not happy right now.

The thing that bothers me the most is....this will have to come out of my car savings to pay for it. That's a fair size set back.

Yeah that happened to H years ago with Fido. We told the guy we wanted it to drive back through Canada and when we tried to activate it in Washington, they said they couldn't activate the phone for anyone who wasn't Canadian. How fucked up was that. So we never dealt with Fido ever again either.

I've heard good things about Bell... I'd go with them if I bought a phone.

i haven't had problems with my phone and its from bell. i got the 200 min / month plan, which is more then enough since i barely use a 1/4 of it. if you go into a bell world store you get better rates then in shops like radio shack or future shop. my phone was only $49, $100 off what the above two 2 stores were charging!

i had fido, it was a bitch. only good if on 401, didn't work on any other 400 series highway. which made it a bitch when i couldn't use it to call my parents when i had a flat tire half way between the barn and home, since i was in a dead area for fido.

I can't get those discounts because I'll be getting a pay as you go, pre-paid, or however you want to call it plan. That means no discount because I'm not getting myself into a long term contract (one or two years). If I wanted to sign a contract for service, I could get massive discounts or even a free phone depending on which I want. But I don't want a cell phone for regular use (and the discount doesn't cover the extra money paid out for the service in that time). A pay as you go where I may use it once in awhile is fine by me. So for trips and such I can have it since I wouldn't have used the minutes up yet ;)

I have a prepaid phone with Bell Mobility, using their Solo plan. I've had it for going on 2 years now... I had originally bought it for my trip to Toronto in 2001 so it has an area code 416 phone number, and if I throw $25 at it every 6 months or so (it gets deactivated after 240 days of zero balance), the number for the phone will still remain mine. In fact, I think I can even use it in the US, though there will be a ton of roaming charges.

The last time I used it was while I was on my trip through the Canadian Rockies last year, and it worked just fine, though there were places in the Rockies where I didn't have service, but overall, it worked wherever I went. And if/when I go to Toronto again (likely December), I'll still have a phone. =)

Heh, that works, but isn't is rather expensive to do such a thing?

I wouldn't think it would work well in the Rockies given how little there is there to justify coverage heh. Good to know though.

It is a little expensive, but I figure that it's around $50CDN/year to keep an active phone number so that if/when I ever do go back into Canada and the like, people can call me and let me know if/when they want to meet up or something.

And it saves having to pay the phone fees from the hotels and stuff I stay in. =)
