Grocery store thoughts
First, before anyone thinks how pathetic this post is going to sound, I'm just using it as a sounding board of sorts. Writing out my thoughts to help me focus a bit. If you want to comment on it, by all means go ahead.
Since I start working there tomorrow night again, I've been thinking about that place this week. The more I think about it, the more I'm dreading going back. The place there is just plain annoying is a start. But I've been thinking several things:
1) My wrist is no where near 100% it seems. How do I know this? Well, up until Monday I thought it was around 95% of normal. Then I managed to aggravate it again. ARGH! I was leaving a store and the door only opened like half way. Well, I used the bad hand to open the door since I was carrying my stuff in the good hand. Well, when the door only opened part way, I jammed my wrist against the door. It was rather painful for the next two days. I'm feeling better, but I have trouble with any real weight. So I'm not bad, bad, but not great either. Going back to that store, lifting lots of weight is not going to be good. I have to wonder if I'll just keep aggravating the injury leading to an extremely long recovery time. I could try to get a wrist support, but that will not aid in healing very much. It will mostly make me dependant on it and lead to a long recovery later on. Not a great situation.
2) One big reason I had to keep the job was the dental benefits. But by the time I go to the dentist again, I won't even be working there to get the benefits, so that plus is out the window.
3) Up until recently I had been using last year's hours as a guideline for this year. But I forgot one big difference. One of our staff was in the garden centre last year. But she left the department and the new guy is not going out there. That was the equivalent of full time hours myself and the teenage twit who was there got to share. Without that, I won't have much in the way of hours available. Limited hours=limited available cash from them after expenses like union dues and taxes. That's a huge waste of those evenings/weekends.
4) My loss of weekends and evening is a huge pain. Why? Because I can't arrange trips to see people outside of the city until the last minute since I never know when I'm working. This makes it difficult for me to see several of my friends. You have no idea how much this pisses me off. Several times in the last several months (going back almost a year really), I've wanted to go see them, but couldn't due to that store. I was usually working Fri-Sun which killed any real chance to see them. I have no idea how much longer some of them will be in the area. They have lives that are reaching to the point where they'll probably leave soon. I was away from them for a time due to other factors in my life. I've been back for awhile now and I either can't find old friends, or I just can't see them for whatever reason. This annoys me muchly. In case you're wondering, visiting during the week is prohibitive for me. Since I have to go to bed early each night, I can't easily drive down and see them for the day and come back.
5) I've been away from this job for just shy of SEVEN weeks. Almost two months without a pay from them and I'm doing okay financially. The major holidays from supplying are over, so no major interruptions to pay from that anymore. So, having the job for the extra money isn't a huge reason for me right now given how often I seem to get work from there. When combined with the above points, it makes me wonder why I bother.
6) I have said before that I am not keeping this job beyond June anyway. So it's not like I was planning on having this job for much longer anyway. Right now I have access to almost $2.5k if needed. That would be plenty to get me through the summer in case something disastrous happened, like no summer job (and I'll probably be adding to that before school is out). But given my experiences last summer, when I was offered one of eight different classes (and possibly others), I'm sure I can probably get a position this year with my increased experience (I had none last year) from summer school last year and supplying this year.
I think there were other points/angles I was thinking of, but I can't remember right now. I'm thinking of going in tomorrow and Saturday and see how my wrist is. I can also check next week's schedule to give me an idea of what to expect in the future. But given what I've laid out, I don't see a future there. If you can think of anything to add that I've missed, by all means go ahead and tell me.
