Recent advances in science have been amazing. One recent change is a test that may be able to identify some fatal brain-wasting diseases caused by prions. It may not sound like much, but this was once thought impossible but a group has found a way to not only be able to identify the damaged prions, but possibly be able to destroy them, another thing thought impossible. So a way to identify (aside from examining brain tissue after death), a vaccine and possibly a treatment may be in the cards in the future for these diseases. The big one getting play here right now is Mad Cow disease.

For the fools out there
Jun. 3rd, 2003 08:29 amFor those fools out there who still believe that smoking is not harmful to you or others, I offer you these two stories: 1) Even casual smoking is harmful to newborns leading to them being born with addictions in addition to birth defects. There's a reason you are not to smoke during pregnancy or be near people who smoke. 2) American cigarettes more carcinogenic than other brands: CDC. They did a study on the cancer-causing chemicals in cigarettes from two manufactures in the US and 13 from other countries. They found the brands from the US had TWICE the number of cancer-causing chemicals than 11 of the 13 other countries. Something I found odd, a spokesperson for one of the companies actually said: "We're trying to find a way to reduce the harm associated with our products by reducing the level of harmful constituents that smokers inhale." I just find that interesting that there's an admission that these things are bad for you heh.
