Yesterday was interesting
Apr. 10th, 2003 08:40 amWas unable to post it last night:
I was called to Tollgate today for woodworking. So it turns out to have been a rather easy day. It was supposed to be second period: watch movie, third and fourth were a two period class who were going to the career resource centre for the afternoon. Well, about halfway through first period I was asked by the principal to cover the last 25min or so of a first period class. Why? Turns out the regular teacher for it just didn't show up for class, and didn't notify the school. They thought maybe he had car trouble or something. There was an EA in there and she was looking after the group. She thought maybe the guy was just picking up supplies as the reason why he was late. But half way through the period she notified the office and that's when I came in. I looked after them for the rest of that period with the idea being that the teacher would show up by the beginning of second period.
Well second period came and I was starting to look after my group, with them deciding to watch Under Siege (their choice out of several movies). The class I was helping with in first period was still without a teacher. Thankfully it was also right next door to mine and the rooms were essentially sharing the same room with it split by a wall covering the first half of the room (hope this makes sense). So what happened was I would mostly look after my class and periodically check in on the next door class. An EA is not allowed to fill the role of a teacher, so someone else has to be in charge. With my group watching a movie and the other class under the eye of their EA, we went with that. The principal was not overly happy with the fact that the regular teacher did not show up (they even sent someone to look for him in case it was car trouble). As a result of all this, they gave me credit for looking after an extra class instead of just an extra 0.5 class.
The afternoon classes went well. We went to the career resource room and had a workshop on resumes, interviews, etc for getting jobs for the students. It lasted for both periods. It was fun to go through. The person doing it was great. She's fairly new at it, but deals with the students well. If you knew the students, then you'd understand how much of a compliment that is heh.
