Newfoundland requires a deposit tax of 6 cents on all beverage containers. The refund for returning it was 3 cents. Okay, makes sense. Now, the provincial government has recently announced an increase in the amount of the return to 5 cents to help increase the number of people recycling. But hold on, they've also increased the deposit tax to 10 cents. They seem to think this plan will increase the recycling rate because the recycling rate in this province is pittiful. I don't know about you, but it looks like it's more of a tax grab. Increase the deposit return by 2 cents when almost no one does the returns, but increase the tax by 4 cents. I don't know about you, but even if everyone recycled, that's still an extra tax of 2 cents. For everyone who does not recycle, that's a straight tax increase of 4 cents. And the government wonders why no one is happy about this?

Just thought I'd mention....this province doesn't have curb side pick up for recyclable materials. Instead, you have to drive your recyclables to a recycling depot that is not accessable to everyone in this province. And, for those of us without the use of a car like myself, no matter how much we'd like to recycle, we can't because we have no way of taking our materials to a recycling depot.
